Wildfires in Southwestern Hills of Jerusalem, 2021

When wildfires erupted in the Southwestern hills of Jerusalem in 2021, they destroyed up to 20,000 dunums of pine forest that had been planted by the JNF, revealing the terraced hillsides that had been concealed by the monocultural forest of trees. Sherena Razack (2024, abstract and link below) posits fire as an elemental force of Indigenous Palestinian resistance to the ongoing Nakba, and its displacements of both people and land. Consult Razack’s visual essay to explore her claim that fire is an elemental force of resistance. What other forms of resistance can you identify?
